Erenköy H.K House

In this house in Erenköy, Kadıköy, we dressed the windows from ceiling to floor in a linen-textured sheer and an earth-toned drape; in the study and the kitchen, Venetian blinds set the light.

In this house the wood and the daylight were already strong. The curtains were there not to compete with them but to complete them, so we worked in three tones: linen for the sheer, earth for the drapes, walnut for the blinds.

Sheers and drapes

The linen-textured sheer filters the daylight and spreads it softly through the room; the earth-toned drapes frame the window on either side. In the evening, with the lamps on, the texture of the drapes comes forward and carries the warmth of the room. The tracks are hidden in recesses in the ceiling and in pelmet boxes, so from the room you see only fabric, one line from ceiling to floor.

Blinds

The study's full-height window has a wooden Venetian blind with fabric tapes; the dark tone of its slats belongs with the room's wooden cabinetry. The blind sets the light by the angle of its slats, a flexibility that matters for long hours at a screen. We carried the same tone into the kitchen.

In the detail

The real work in this house is where the eye does not go first: the wide band at the hem of the sheer, folds that fall at the same spacing at every window, hems that come down to the floor. We measured in the house, sewed the curtains in our own workshop, and our own team fitted them.

Sheers and drapes

Sheer and drapes falling from a recess in the ceiling; under the pendant lamp the fabric stands like a single surface.
In another room the sheer and drapes fall from a pelmet box running along the wall.
Where the window ends, the drape rests against the wall; the spotlight brings out its texture.
Up close: on the left the linen-textured sheer filtering the light, on the right the earth-toned drape.
The hems finish in a wide band and come down to the parquet; behind them the folds line up at the same spacing.

Venetian blinds

In the study the blind falls from the ceiling; fabric tapes carry its slats.
With the slats open the street stays in view; turned, they dim the light as far as you want.
The kitchen window above the worktop; the blind falls from just under the strip of light in the ceiling.
